Cherry St Bridge Finally Lowers July 25th

-

Update: Although July 4th was the expected lowering date, please see image below for updates to these delays

The Cherry Street Bridge has been permanently held in an upright position while awaiting repair since April. This has left no access for any foot, cycle or car transit and means that anyone trying to access Cherry Beach must travel down Commissioner Street to Leslie Street, then through the pedestrian pathways to access the beach.

However, good news!

A mechanical part is arriving on July 4th and even though the repair is expected to take until July 28th, the bridge will be brought into its down position during the repair. That means cyclists, pedestrians and cars will no longer have to make the long, dusty detour and can access the bridge during the fix.

The Cherry Street bridge, constructed in 1968, is a moveable, metal mesh bridge that allows for boat clearance in the Toronto Harbour Ship Channel.  How those ships will be getting through the channel during the bridge’s down position is unknown.. perhaps being diverted to other channels in the harbour.
