Toronto Island is now home to the world’s longest Rainbow Road in the world and is befittingly located on Hanlan’s Point on Toronto Island; a place steeped in history and now Canada’s oldest surviving queer space.
Coming in second at 570 meters is Netherland’s rainbow road created in 2021.
The work was completed by artist Travis Myers and is called “The Long Walk to Equality”. In March 2024, city council approved its installation and was financially supported by Friends of Hanlans, Waterfront BIA and Pride Toronto.
This 600 meter pathway is located where the first “Gay Day Picnic” was held on August 1st, 1971. This was a fundraiser that would send activists to Ottawa to march for Gay rights and, in doing so, became Toronto’s first Pride event.
To visit Rainbow Road, hop on the Toronto Ferry or grab one of the many water taxis from Toronto’s waterfront.
