Ireland Park Neighbourhood Getting a Facelift and Promenade

-

Ireland Park’s neighbourhood is now officially being referred to as the Bathurst Quay Common and is undergoing big changes to this section of Toronto’s waterfront.

Between Billy Bishop’s Ferry Terminal and Ireland Park, the revitalization of what used to be a secluded and sequestered area of Toronto’s waterfront will now include a 1-acre park within the Canada Malting Co. property, a multi–purpose plaza, landscaping and garden spaces.

The city is transforming this industrial-seeming area into a lakefront promenade while still preserving the history of Ireland Park which commemorates the Irish who sought refuge during the Great Famine in 1847. The city had to think quickly to supply housing, healthcare and basic human needs to the sudden population increase of 20,000 to nearly 60,000 people.

The Malting Silos restoration is already complete and the construction of the cultural plaza is making strong advances toward completion this summer. Finalization is expected in the fall of 2024.
